Discomfort for the Church: Jake’s Story

Why did you decide to help revitalize Tabernacle?

I decided to help revitalize Tabernacle because I sensed God inviting me into a season of meaningful, hands-on work in a local church. Over the past year, I had come to see that while my time at Providence had been healthy and life-giving, it wasn’t where I was meant to stay long-term. I didn’t yet know what was next, but I felt confident that God was leading me toward something new.

When Sam reached out and I had the opportunity to talk with both him and Dane about their hopes and vision for Tabernacle, things began to come into focus. Hearing their heart for reaching spiritually lost people, helping people grow in the Gospel, and be sent out to make disciples in Raleigh and the world inspired me. God made it clear I was to pursue this vision with them.

What excites and intimidates you about Tabernacle?

What excites me most about Tabernacle is the leadership already in place. Dane, Sam, and the rest of the elders care deeply about this church and have a strong desire to see it grow in health and impact. They want Tabernacle to be a place where people clearly hear the message of Jesus, are cared for well, and are equipped to serve others both locally and beyond. That kind of leadership gives me a lot of hope and confidence.

What intimidates me is the uncertainty. I’ve never been part of a church revitalization before, and there are plenty of unknowns. I don’t know exactly what things will look like in a month, six months, or a year. At times, that can feel overwhelming. My prayer—and my request for prayer—is that I, along with the rest of the team, would stay focused on being faithful today rather than worrying about what’s ahead.

Why should someone consider joining us in this work?

You should consider joining this revitalization if you want to be part of a church that truly needs and values committed people who are willing to help wherever there is a need. This kind of work stretches you. I know I’ll be asked to do things I’ve never done before or don’t feel fully prepared to do—and that can be uncomfortable.

But I’m excited about that. I believe God often uses moments like these to grow us, remind us that we don’t have all the answers, and show us that real impact doesn’t come from our strength but from trusting Him. I’m confident that being part of this work will shape me in good ways, and I believe it can do the same for anyone who chooses to join us.
